Iran hangs woman, four men

The woman, identified only by her first name Shabnam, was convicted of stabbing her husband to death after learning that he wanted to divorce her and marry a younger woman, the paper said.

Two of the men, identified as Amin and Vahid, were found guilty of murdering taxi drivers.

A third identified as Majid was convicted of killing a five-year-old boy during a robbery, while the fourth, Najaf, was found guilty of killing his brother-in-law in a family dispute.

Wednesday's hangings bring to at least 180 the number of executions in Iran this year, according to an AFP count.

According to Amnesty International, Iran applied the death penalty more than any other country apart from China last year, executing 317 people.

Capital offences in the Islamic republic include murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery.
